When the ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award was first awarded, it was difficult to imagine its relationship with recent urban history where specific events like the Olympics and the Expos have encouraged significant proposals for transforming cities.
1988
On 24th May this year the ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Awards were awarded in Madrid, in an act attended by, among other prominent people, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic Germany in Spain.
1990
The second Award was organized with a view to the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and Pasqual Maragall, then Mayor of Barcelona, and Juan Antonio Samaranch, chairman of the IOC, participated in the awards.
1992
Coinciding with the Expo’92 in Seville, the third edition of the Award was held in the city, becoming a classic award in the field of architecture.
1994
On this occasion, Bilbao was chosen to host the Award and the participation surpassed even the most optimistic expectations: 79 projects presented.
1996
The 10th anniversary of the ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award was held in Lisbon. A large part of the institutional, cultural and economic world of Portugal and Spain came together in Lisbon in the presence of His Excellency, Dr. Jorge Sampaio, President of the Republic of Portugal.
1998
On this occasion, Valencia was the city chosen to develop the object of the Award.
The award was presented in the Lonja de Valencia, a building from the XV century of incomparable beauty and architectural interest, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
2000
The seventh edition of the Award was held in the city of Gijón and had the largest participation in the history of the prize: 760 architects.
2002
Porto, that grand city in the north of Portugal, was the host for the eighth edition. The projects presented generated an intense debate amongst the members of the jury.
2004
Saragossa is the city that has been chosen and it has the added interest in that it has been chosen to hold the forthcoming Universal Exhibition, Saragossa 2008.
2007
Granada was chosen to host the tenth edition of the ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award. For the first time in the history of the award, architects from Arabic countries took part in the competition. This opening coincided with the beginning of a new business era for ThyssenKrupp Elevator the objective of which is to increase the presence of the company in markets where it is already present and to enter other new markets.
2008
The eleventh edition of the Award is being held in Dubai and represents the international opening up of the competition.
