Goran Rako Team from Croatia wins the First Prize at the XII ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award

ThyssenKrupp Elevator in partnership with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and under the auspices of the International Union of Architects is proud to announce the winners of the ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award 2011.

The Project presented by the team led by Goran Rako (RADIONICA ARHITEKTURE) from Croatia has been awarded the $100,000 First Prize for the "Istanbul Disaster Prevention and Education Center" proposal. The project Design is a proposal of a urban element which is not competing with the large and architecturally inarticulate buildings in the neighbourhood but instead is bringing a new view. The building offers to its visitors and employees a different and better universe.

The Project presented by the team led by Manuel Der Hagopian (GROUP8ASIA) from Vietnam was awarded the $50,000 Second Prize and The Project presented by Youssef Mallat from Lebanon was awarded the $20,000 Third Prize. The Jury short-listed ten proposals with merit, and awarded the best three proposals.

A total of 2,692 architects in 1,495 teams from 95 countries have been considered as eligible for this year’s award and a total of 287 projects from 59 countries have been submitted to the competition. Besides renowned architects, the Jury includes the Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Kadir Topbas as the Honorary President and, on the behalf of the ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award Chairman Javier Del Pozo.

The winning project will be a first in Turkey

Participants of the 2011 ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Awards were required to propose an Istanbul Disaster Prevention and Education Center. For the project, a piece of land of 27,000 square meters has been allocated. The center will be equipped with audiovisual educational appliances and simulation systems to recreate the experiences of earthquake, hurricane, firefighting, smoke, inundation, first aid and emergency communications. In the center, there will be a planetarium, a library, information boards and seminar and meeting halls that will serve to inform the visitors.

ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award Chairman Javier Del Pozo stated that "ThyssenKrupp Elevator is proud that such an international project is held in Istanbul which is an outstanding city with its potential in infrastructure and its multicultural values". Mr. Del Pozo thanked Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and the international jury members -well known architects- for their great support and cooperation during the XII awards held in Turkey. Mr. Del Pozo continued "this center will be the first institution with the intended facilities and the project includes a training center to create public consciousness and awareness. It will become the meeting point for well-known experts in disasters and relevant seminars will be held. Being close to the airport in a newly developing area, the center will be able to host wide range of relevant activities in this regards."

The jury members Rafael de la Hoz, Spanish architect and Suha Özkan, the Turkish architect gave an explanation for the selection of the award winning project on behalf of the jury.

Established in 1988, the Architecture Award was envisaged by ThyssenKrupp Elevator as a way to engage professionals to create outstanding proposals for major cities, globally.

The selection of Istanbul as the place for the XII ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award, and the large number of participants in the Competition represent an international indication and recognition of the distinctive urban and cultural development of Istanbul and its role in the promotion of architecture in the world.
