The Project presented by the studio Radionica Arhitekture, led by Goran Rako from Croatia, has been awarded with the First Prize ($100,000) with this design proposal. The Disaster Prevention and Education Centre proposed is a flat house, a large garden among high rise buildings. The project organizes all the training and simulation functions around a lush park. The building is designed as a new microcosm, equally traditional and contemporary to offer to its visitors and employees a different and better world.

The Second Prize ($50,000) was given to the studio group8asia, led by Manuel Der Hagopian from Vietnam. The Third Prize ($20,000) was given to studio 109 Architectes, led by Youssef Mallat from Lebanon. The winners received their awards from the Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Dr. Kadir Topbas and the Chairman of ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award Javier Del Pozo.

Dr. Kadir Topbas: “I am glad that twelfth edition of the International Architecture Competition, which has been organized every two years since 1988 is arranged for Istanbul. I would like to express my gratitude for the support in organization of the competition, through which iconic designs were developed for major cities of Europe and Dubai, was run for Istanbul. Consequently we developed the project of Disaster Prevention and Education Centre, which will be the first institution in Turkey, through an international competition. During the entire process of the competition our several well-known architects were together with us. I would like to thank at first to ThyssenKrupp Elevator Group and its President and also to Union of International Architects, to our Jury Members and to all competitors who participated and contributed to the project from all over the world. “

ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award Chairman Javier Del Pozo stated that “On behalf of ThyssenKrupp Elevator I would like to express my most heartfelt gratitude at the interest and effort the Municipality of Istanbul has devoted to our Architecture Awards. Its spirit of collaboration has gone beyond expectations. We are certain that the future Disaster Prevention and Education Centre will meet the needs and requirements of its functional mission within the frame of a singular and innovative building.”

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality allocated a piece of land of 27,000 square meters for this project. The center will be equipped with audiovisual educational appliances and simulation systems to recreate the experiences of earthquake, hurricane, firefighting, smoke, inundation, first aid and emergency communications. In the center, there will be a planetarium, a library, information boards and seminar and meeting halls that will serve to inform the visitors.

The selection of Istanbul as the place for the XII ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award, held under the auspicious of the International Union of Architects, represents an international indication and recognition of the distinctive urban and cultural development of Istanbul and its role in the promotion of architecture in the world.
