ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture AWARD 2007

In Granada, in El Carmen de los Mártires, at 10.00 a.m. on 26th September 2007, the Jury of the ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture AWARD ?2007 met, CHAIRED by Mr. Javier del Pozo Portillo and in the presence of the Architects:

Mr. Miguel Díaz y Negrete, Mr. Jaume Duró i Pifarré, Ms. Dalila ElKerdany, Mr. Nabil Gholam, Mr. Imad Hassan, Mr. Rafael de la Hoz, Mr. Josep Lluis Mateo, Mr. Tarek Naga, Mr. Antonio Ortiz, Mr. Alfonso Vegara and Mr. Manuel Vicente;

and the award Secretary and Dean of the Official Association of Architects of Granada, Mr. Emilio Herrera.

The following apologise for their absence for reasons beyond their control: Mr. Carlos Hernández Pezzi, Mr. Manuel Salgado and Mr. Antonio Lamela. The latter provided Jesús Sanjurjo, coordinator of the ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award, with a document in which he gave his appraisal of the projects that, in his opinion, should be award-winners. Said document was taken into account at the Jury's plenary session.

THE AWARD JURY DECLARES THAT:

With 19 projects having been accepted in line with the Terms and Conditions of the Award, these were assessed in order to select the award-winners.

Following an extensive debate and analysis of the projects, the Jury decided, in an initial round, to select the following projects in order to elect the finalists from among them:

22041, GR717, BIRDS, ICON, ALMAA, 21977, GRX07 and 12345

The jury then continued with its deliberations, selecting the following five for final consideration as the winners of this year's trophy:

GR717, BIRDS, ICON, 21977 and 12345

After continuing with an intense debate, the jury decided to grant two of the three third prizes to the projects ICON and 21977 and to focus its final discussion on the following three projects: BIRDS, 12345 and GR717.

After a lively and intense debate on the three proposed finalists, the jury made its decision in which, by a majority vote, the following award-winners of the tenth ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture AWARD were decided on:

First Prize, the project presented under code 12345. Once the envelope guaranteeing confidentiality of participation had been opened before Mr. Andrés Tortosa, Dean of the Association of Notaries Public of Granada, this code corresponded to EVA LOPEZ DE LA FUENTE (Team manager).

The jury considered that this proposal was able to specifically and generally capture the essence of the problem of urban planning:

  • It captured the concept of Granada and its surroundings extremely well and integrated the facilities appropriately into their context.
  • Falta Cadena
  • It focused on many different levels of spatial interaction and organisation, specifying the physical boundaries of the area in question and coordinating uses such as sloped garden areas, a botanical and mineral garden, a viewpoint belt around Camino de Ronda and sporting facilities, etc. with the railway station.
As winner of the Second Prize, the jury chose project GR717 corresponding to GERMANO VIEIRA (Team manager).

Regarding this project, the jury would like to indicate that: the profile of the Alhambra descends towards La Vega to create artificial topography that is mountain, peak and station all at once.

The jury considered the following projects worthy winners of the three Third Prizes (no order of pre-eminence among them):

  • BIRDS corresponding to CARMEN NAVAS-PAREJO GALERA (Team manager).
  • ICON corresponding to PAULO CALAPEZ (Team manager).
  • 21977 corresponding to CRISTINA PRADES GARCIA (Team manager).
The Jury would like to congratulate the authors of all the projects presented and thank them for their work. They have offered the city of Granada some extremely interesting ideas for the issue posed.

Granada, 26th September 2007.
